Social media is a very interesting phenomena. And it is attracting marketers like bees to ...orange blossoms So far I see four different ways it is being used: - for relationships
- for marketing
- for branding
- as a weapon
Each way is a unique proposition, and often times you can't use them altogether in the same property. In this site, I will share my findings in social media as a journey. If you want an expert, you are not in the right place... but I would run away from any person that claims to be an expert actually. ;) Following this classification, we are going to explore methods and properties used within the different contexts; to make experiments, develop strategies and share the results. I would like you to join me and we'll do this together. I love stages... but for dancing, not for pitching to the crowd... ;) |

I use Twitter for branding and building relationships (nice way to say: play around and make friends! LOL), so I don't use any automatic poster at all. But I always keep an eye open to catch new trends in terms of bots and how they reflect in my Twitter timeline. Today, with a fast look I caught two. The first one is in the "quit smoking" niche, the second in the "alternative energy" niche. Quit smoking case
it seems to retweet everything that contains its main keywords. Of course, this comes with a price... have a look at the first tweet. LOL I'm not sure what they are using, haven't seen this before. Solar energy case
it is using tweeterfeed to post links to info about solar stuff. He/she might be using a news aggregator to collect it and then ads that feed in tweeterfedd. This method actually seems to be giving nice results, the info must be good as it is a lists and the followers count is aroud 5K. |

Direct Marketing in social media takes some experience in assessing emotional temperatures and states. People don't usually jump into a social media environment to buy something; they don't have the credit card at hand and ready to be used. So marketing in social media works as interruption marketing. Interruption marketing is annoying by default. If you add to it any type of camouflage to force the click... it can be your ticket to Bye Bye land. Social media does work very well for freebies, coupons, and anything monetized on the back end. People will give email for some info they find interesting easily. And if you are doing a good job branding, they will even do it just because you ask. I have seen it happening in others and even in myself. I'm registered to all the lists of people I interact with and like, just to keep myself informed of their comings and goings. I have seen weird stuff happening, like a lot of people registering to my blog when there is no call to action at all in the site, and I actually don't even have my back end content there yet. |

The way people approach it is very similar to any other social environment. I like to think about it as a club. You have the popular crowd, who live to be seen, but would run to the bathroom to wash themselves if someone dares to touch them. You have those who go to have fun with friends, have their own ways and codes and don't mix that much with others. You have those who really want to interact and keep looking around to see something interesting happening. You have the show off girls dancing on tables. Some of them play virgins if a guy approaches them, some bring it. You see the shy, the movers, big egos, lil egos... and everything in between. I am very social and really enjoy playing in these sites. I like making friends, enjoy an interesting conversation, and find problem solving orgasmic. |

There are tons of conversations going on in different properties, from Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, to forums of all types and colors. Each host website has its unique proposition and invites you to play a different game. These places provide an amazing opportunity for branding. If you choose right, you can become a celebrity in a social media site in a couple of months by adding value and expertise to others' lives. Information runs like fire, so it is really interesting. For example, some groups changed the basement for the stage thanks to MYSpace. Record companies contracted several of them with a good amount of fans. Big corporations are increasing the sxpending on online advertising. People spend more time on Youtube than watching tv right now... so you get the picture, if you want to exist, you have to brand in social media. |
